Making a Move!

J and I have BIG news! On March 15 we closed on our first home…. in OMAHA! That’s right, we’re moving back to the heartland to be closer to our friends and family. We couldn’t think of a better place to welcome our baby girl.

Closing weekend was fast and furious – only 3 days in Omaha. J assembled the nursery furniture and a china hutch with the help of our dads. I got some basic cleaning done, but mostly I made an inventory of the work we should try to get done over spring break.

We’re now back in Nebraska for a whole week and have gotten SO much done!

  • Puppy-proofed the backyard fence
  • Did major spring clean-up of the lawn (imagine 10+ bags of leaves and sticks)
  • Painted 6 rooms
  • Assembled more furniture
  • Installed our washer and dryer
  • Washed up Baby M’s bedding and clothes
  • Rekeyed locks
  • Bought a rocker for the nursery

Whew. It’s been a ton of work, but getting all of these tasks done now will make our move at the end of April so much easier!

I’ll do a bigger house update after we make the move – stay tuned for some pretty awesome before and afters :)

Preserving Wedding Memories: Memento Collage

I had mentioned in previous posts that several of our wedding keepsakes have become subtle mementos in our home. One of my first decorating tasks was finding a way to incorporate a few of the meaningful details from the wedding into part of our everyday life and lasting reminders of our day. I achieved this by creating a collage on one of our living room walls. It includes a variety of objects and photos that all carry great significance to us. Per usual, I found my inspiration on Pinterest – check it out here! With hammer in hand (and a bit of wall tape), I brought my vision to life:

I love having the kind words from our guests right where we can see them. What would you include on your memory wall?

J and I made this cute box of cupcakes and took them over to our neighbor’s house yesterday as a sweet St. Patty’s day treat. Today the little neighbor girl brought over a rock from her collection as a thank you for the cupcake. What a doll- aren’t kids the best?!

Purging Plastics

Remember how I mentioned getting rid of ALL plastic in my kitchen, well spring break offered the perfect opportunity to make this goal a reality. I went through every drawer, cabinet and shelf pitching all plastics into a box. I haven’t quite decided what to do with all my old plastics. Some will be kept as storage containers for small household items but everything else will probably go to Good Will or be recycled. In place of those pesky plastics, I’ve opted to stock my shelves with gently used CorningWare courtesy of my parents (yes, they scream 1980 and I love them!).

I’m not 100% plastic free, but I’m getting there. We live in such a disposable society. Nothing is meant to last and we (myself included) throw things away without a second thought. I want to create a different, more mindful lifestyle for J and I as a family. It’s been an adjustment already, but it’s all about establishing a new “normal.” What steps have you taken to be more eco-conscious?
